UBD (Understanding By Design)
Artifact Description
As an artifact to represent Standard 7, I chose to include my unpacked standard, which is also referred to as Understanding by Design (UBD). This organizer helps to dissect a standard and use those pieces to create a series of connected lesson plans.
AnalysisThis artifact demonstrates my ability to plan instruction to meet curriculum goals. As I completed this organizer and brainstormed activities, I could also make sure that the needs of my students were simultaneously being met. This method of planning instruction acted as a map to making sure that I was meeting the many aspects of instruction. It allowed me to connect students' prior knowledge by taking into account what they already know before the unit, as well as what they will know by each lesson based on the one before it. In this way, subsequent lessons built on those lessons previously taught within the unit. This organizer helped me plan how to build the students' vocabulary with terms that were important to the unit. Incorporating supporting texts is another feature of this organizer. Preplanning these possible additional resources was very helpful to be prepared for a lack of understanding or interest from the students. I was able to combine all this information that was unpacked and create clear objectives to focus on what I wanted the students to learn.

SynthesisThe UBD format helps create short-range and long-range plans that meet curriculum goals while using contextual considerations that bridge curriculum and student experiences. Since having used this tool during my instruction planning, I have found that I have come back to it for subsequent units that I have needed to plan.
Planning instruction is an area that I anticipate immense professional growth with my upcoming experience in the Graduate Induction Program (GIP). I struggle with creating clear and focused objectives and the UBD has helped me with that issue. I plan to use this format often in the upcoming first years of my career as an aid for practicing the skills of making all aspects of the lesson align with the curriculum goals, and also prioritizing the individual needs and performance of the students during the planning process. |
