Multiple Intelligences Quiz
Artifact Description
As an artifact to represent Standard 4, I chose a Multiple Intelligences Quiz that I gave the students in my ten week student teaching placement. The quiz is an unofficial evaluation of the various learning styles. Students rated themselves on a scale of 0-5 on how strongly they identified with the statements provided. Based on the category to which their responses corresponded, students could see where their strengths resided within each learning style.
AnalysisThis quiz meets this standard by the insight it provides me about the students and the way they learn best. The theory of Multiple Intelligences, as established by Howard Gardner, illustrates that people learn in many ways and to meet those learning styles will yield deeper understanding and greater knowledge. I tailored my instruction according to the results from the quizzes to adapt instruction to student responses, ideas, and needs. Using this quiz requires me to have a good understanding of cognitive processes related to learning and how these process can be triggered, therefore, I must make sure I interpret the results in a meaningful manner. Without appropriate understanding of the cognitive processes, the quiz loses its value and usefulness.
As insightful as the results are to me, they are equally as important to the students. I instructed students to total up their scores and gave them descriptions of each of the intelligences so they could learn what they meant and some possible careers that would lend themselves well to people with those strengths. This knowledge helps students to understand how they learn best and provides them direction during opportunities of academic choice and other self-directed activities. |
SynthesisWhen I implemented this quiz I did not fully understand how to use the results to their full potential. I still have much to learn, but I felt that I could have more effectively integrated the learning styles into my instruction. The theory of Multiple Intelligences is one in which I profoundly believe and strive to incorporate into my daily instruction. As I begin my teaching career, I hope to continue learning through experience which strategies and methods foster the greatest success for each of the multiple intelligences and how I can integrate the intelligences within single lessons.
Each year, the needs and interests of my students will change, and the effectiveness of the strategies will vary depending on each individual student. The process of implementing the quiz and the scores that result will need to be constantly re-evaluated and customized to each class. The success of each of my students is my greatest concern, thus, the efforts I make to consider their learning styles in my instruction will all be worth it. |
