Ice Cream for Books
Artifact Description
As an artifact to represent Standard 10, I chose to include my participation in the planning and execution of a literacy event called Ice Cream for Books, which was held at Riverside Elementary School. During this event, my cohort created multiple literacy activities and games for students and their families to play. My cohort dressed up as characters from various books. I also participated in a team that helped advertise the event to students, families, and staff by creating the flyer I included as a second artifact for this standard and event.
AnalysisThis event was a major collaborative effort with the staff of Riverside Elementary School and my cohort and professors from the education program at WSU-R. Planning for this event included: specific activities and which aspects of literacy they each addressed, characters we portrayed and our costume elements, ethnic and cultural elements - representing the diversity in our world and specifically at Riverside - to be integrated at each station, various advertising methods, projecting total number of participants, and much more. Communication, organization, and special considerations were all integral parts to the process of creating this event. The unique ideas that each person brought to the design and production of this event caused it be such a success.

SynthesisThe feedback I received on this event was very positive. The students and families had a wonderful experience as a result of the collaboration of the many teams involved. In the few areas where conflict arose, it became evident that there was a lack of mutual contribution from those involved, however, conflict was not a major issue of this collaborative opportunity. Most people worked well together and were mutually respectful of one another's ideas.
In future situations where collaboration and relationships play a vital role, I will continue to be open to ideas and opinions from other contributors. I believe it is necessary to allow all participating parties to feel valued in order to encourage their investment and support of whatever the project is that is being discussed. |
