Literacy Stations
Artifact Description
As an artifact to represent Standard 4, I have chosen to include the Literacy Stations I created. This schedule organizer was a visual representation of the group rotations held throughout the 80 minute literacy block. The class was divided in five groups based on reading levels and rotated between five different stations, visiting only four of them in a single day. The groups and stations were staggered so that all stations were visited four times per week by each group.
AnalysisI chose this artifact because it includes multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active learning opportunities. The students were provided independent and small group stations, both with and without teacher instruction at those stations for small groups. The strategies included independent reading, independent work time, student-led literature circles, teacher-led reading comprehension skills development, and grammar and writing lessons. Through the different teaching and learning strategies, I varied the instructional process to address the content and purposes of instruction and the needs of students.

SynthesisOne of the areas of this artifact that I would improve, should I use it again in the future, is expanding the variety in the stations. I would use the same rotating structure, but alternate the station activities so that the students had variety in their learning. While the lessons changed each day while I implemented the stations, I could see how students could easily become disengaged with the repeated focus at each station.
Having students work on different activities within the literacy instruction time helps keep the larger block of time run smooth without much restlessness from the students. They were able to get up and move when they rotated stations, and they were provided changes in activity, helping with their focus. |
