Philosophy
Artifact Description
I chose to include my philosophy of teaching as an artifact to represent Standard 1. The philosophy statement consists of my beliefs related to relationships with students, principals, and families, classroom management, curriculum and pedagogy, and school climate.
AnalysisMy beliefs, as declared in this philosophy statement, are shaped by my knowledge and understanding of the central concepts, theories, and viewpoints of subject matter. My experiences working with students, their families, and the administration and other staff members also helped to shape my beliefs. This philosophy statement draws specific connections between those experiences and the values they instilled.
In my various field experiences, I encountered a range of situations in which I applied my understanding of the subject matter with my knowledge of the students through the relationships I established with them in order to create meaningful learning experiences. The idea that social learning is as important as academic learning is central to my philosophy. It is my belief that in order to teach subject matter in meaningful ways for students, I must address all aspects of teaching, including the social aspects, to truly be effective. |
SynthesisThis statement was recently created, however, I believe that it will only continue to evolve as I encounter new experiences and learn more about subject matter through continued education.
I believe that the strength of this statement lies within the personal connection it has to my experiences. Coming to find my own beliefs based on what I have been exposed to, rather than on the opinions or ideas of others, makes my values more convicting and drives my passion to live by them. Overall, the statement is lengthy, as was pointed out by one of my professors. I hope that as I become more experienced in my upcoming teaching career, I will find ways to be more concise and direct with my beliefs, and rely less on hypothetical ideas. |
