Parent Letter
Artifact Description
As an artifact to represent Standard 6, I chose the parent letter I composed at the start of my six week student teaching placement. The letter informs families of my involvement in their student's classroom and includes some of my background information.
AnalysisThis letter is one example of the type of communication that is necessary to foster collaboration and supportive interaction with the families of my students. This letter helped students and their families get to know me personally and began to process of building rapport. I believe that it is important for me to initiate this level of communication from the very beginning of the school year to begin the process of understanding the backgrounds of my students and identifying cultural differences that may affect school-home and teacher-student communication.

SynthesisLetters are just one of many forms of communication that I plan to use in my classroom. One of the downsides to this method is that students often lose the pages or forget to give them to their parents or guardians at home. The message is lost and the communication weakens over time. I plan to use more direct methods such as email, websites or mobile apps, and phone calls. These other methods allow for more probable receipt of the messages and quicker response from the recipients. I had the opportunity to utilize these methods and found them to be far more effective than this parent letter.
