BFG Literature Circle Unit
Artifact Description
One of the artifacts I chose to represent Standard 4 is the literature circle unit I created for the book The BFG by Roald Dahl. This unit was designed to build student learning over a seven day period. My group consisted of five fourth grade students who were all at the same reading level.

I chose this artifact to showcase my ability to use an instructional strategy in order to nurture the development of critical thinking through active learning opportunities. The unit incorporated various engaging activities designed to deepen student learning and understanding of the text. For every session, each student was assigned a different role from a rotating list. The roles provided different methods of analyzing the text so that students were able to practice looking at various details to deepen their comprehension and connection to the text. I also included crafts, writing prompts, drawing activities, and graphic organizers to meet different learning styles and interests within the small group.

This unit was one of my first efforts at full integration of various learning styles and interests into my lesson. I feel that there were strengths within the unit, such as some technology integration to engage students and routine daily tasks for consistency and deepening of student connection to text.
If I were to recreate this unit, or one similar to it, I would add more technology integration and hands-on activities. From some of my recent experiences, I have seen how these two methods can heighten the level of understanding students have to the events within and parts of a story or text. They can be used as tools and resources for extension activities and research into the details of the story. |
