Math Mini Unit
Artifact Description
As an artifact to represent Standard 7, I chose a mini unit in math that I implemented during my six week student teaching placement. The unit focused on the relationships between quantities and whole numbers.
AnalysisThis math unit meets this standard as it operates at multiple levels to meet the developmental needs of the students and bridges curriculum and student experiences. When teaching the lessons, I incorporated tangible and conceptual level learning. Students used virtual and physical manipulatives to represent their birthdays as they counted and graphed totals. Students also practiced conceptual learning while trying to represent a quantity in various forms, such as tallies, numerals, etc.
Addressing multiple aspects of learning increases the students' abilities to think in both an abstract and concrete manner. As I plan my lessons, I make sure to provide opportunities for multiple types of learning so that the whole brain can be more fully developed. |
SynthesisWhile planning for this unit, I thought that I had included plenty of hand-on activities and clear instruction. The first two lessons went rather well and the students were excited for their turn to use the SMART Board to graph their birthday month. The third lesson called for small group work in which all students contributed to a chart that would display multiple forms of representing a numerical value. My instruction could have been clearer as students began to repeat a single method. Those students who were waiting for a turn to contribute to the chart became restless and lost focus.
I anticipate that with more experience comes the ability to foresee more possible issues that may arise. As I gain experience, I will better plan for those issues. |
